BOLDOGKŐVÁRALJA

The community of Boldogkőváralja is situated 52 kilometres northeast from Miskolc in the western region of Zemplén Mountain. The tiny settlement’s name origins from the castle that stood on the rocks called Boldogkő. The first historical records of the castle dates back to the year of 1282 when the bulding was addressed as Castrum Boldua. After the Mongolian invasion the erection was conducted by the lords of the region who were urged by king Béla the Fourth. The castle on this steep protrusion of rock became a lordship’s centre where the serfs delivered their tribute. After the defeat of Mohács in 1526 the under the following anarchy, the castle changed many hands. It was claimed by different factions including the followers of the Hapsburgs and János Szapolyai.
During the excavations archaeologists discovered a mint in the castle which was established by Earl Ferenc Báró, who was one of the outlaws of his days. The extensive renovation of monuments began in 1960, and today, due to this project an imposing monument awaits every visitor. We can enjoy the panorama of Hernád valley and the region from the castle walls, furthermore, the national Kéktúra hiking tour, which is considered to be Hungary’s first long-distance tour with its 1118 kilometres, touches this land.
