Central Transdanubia

ESZTERGOM

Esztergom is situated in the north of Transdanubia, considered as one of the most significant touristic destination. The seat of archbishop of Esztergom is the centre of the Roman Catholic religion in Hungary. The Basilica of Esztergom is believed as one of Europe’s biggest basilicas in which the only intact building from Hungarian Renaissance, the Bakócz Chapel remained. Prince Géza appointed Esztergom as his permanent seat where his son the first king of Hungary, István was born. The castle played a very significant scene in the history of Medieval Hungary, it was visited by the German Emperor Kondrád the Second, by French King Louis the Seventh and by the Holy Roman Emperor Barbarossa Friedrich the First in the 12th century.
Nowadays the castle houses the Castle museum with its rich exhibition that displays the history of Várhegy from the prehistoric ages to the 17th century. The cathedral’s treasury holds many important religious collection and artefacts including a golden treasure from the 15th century, the Mátyás Calvary.
In the Primate Palace we can discover the Catholic Museum which has gathered Hungarian and European art from different centuries, its gallery consists works of Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Austrian and German artists. Therefore, the collection is considered to be the third biggest art gallery of Hungary. The town and its surroundings are not just only valued as cultural and pilgrimage destination but as a perfect area offering wonderful tracks for hikers.
