FERTŐD

One of the most significant monuments of West Hungary, the Castle Esterházy is located in the city of Fertőd. The wealthy and influential baronial family, the Esterházy family became the lords of the land and building complex in the XVII.th century. In 1720 the first building was a hunting box which was later evolved into a castle during the second part of the 18th century. The heydays of the castle were during the life of Duke Miklós Esterházy, the Illustrious (1714-1790). Even the royal highness, Terézia Mária (1740-1780) visited the castle besides many other nobles. Nowadays twenty-one luxurious chambers and an enormous park await the visitors. We can discover the baroque magnificence, wall paintings, gold covered rooms, sumptuous furnishings, expensive china which vision us the wealth of the baronial family. The famous musician, Joseph Haydn had lived here for ten years as own composer. Among the walls of the spectacular building we can find a rich museum, over and above the centre of Haydn research in Hungary.
Hereabout the city we can enjoy the Fertőd-Hanság National Park’s rare fauna and flora. The region is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage due to its outstanding values and beauty.
