PERNŠTEJN CASTLE

This castle is a castle on a rock above the village of Nedvědice and the rivers Svratka and Nedvědička, some 40 kilometres northwest of Bruno, int he South Moravian Region. It was founded by the Lords of Medlov probably between 1270-1285. The family branch seated at the castle and adopted the then fashionable name Pernštejn /Pernstein/, which is the Cech version derived of the German name, Bärenstein – the „Bear Rock”. Its history is closing connected to the Lords of Pernštejn and their descendants.It has kept its intact appearance int he Gohic and Renaissance forma s it was finished int he first half of the 16th century by the Pernštejns, then the richest and most powerful lordy family of the Czech Kingdom. This csatle to be known as the marble castle because of the marble-like stone used to frame the doors and windows. The castle was built as a typical nazal castle: from 3 sides it was protected by a steep rock slope, the castle could be easily protected by a system of baits.

Pernštejn’s medieval appearance is breathtaking. At this castle the visitor does not just learn about the castle’s history, but rather truly feels its history. Narrow, spiraling staircases, vaulted ceilings, Renaissance chairs and the Baroque chapel all whisper to the visitor their own unique tales.
