Central Transdanubia

TATA

Inhabited since ancient times, the picturesque town of Tata is situated at the foothills of Gerecse Mountain, in Transdanubia. The Fortress of Tata and the Castle of Esterházy together with the oldest fishpond in Hungary, the Lake Öreg, are significant landmarks of  Tata.
The castle with its commanding structure was built as ordered by King Zsigmond of Luxemburg (1387-1437) at the turn of the 14th-15th centuries. The fortress was the king’s favourite residence. He welcomed King Ulászló Jagello of Poland at this representative building, in 1412. King Mátyás (1458-1490) converted the castle into a late-gothic residence in the 1480s. Following the Battle of Mohács (1526), Tata functioned as an important border-castle mainly supporting the defence of Győr. In the 18th century, the area became the property of the Esterházy family and Tata prospered as the centre of the region. During this period many baroque style buildings were constructed here. In 1733 Earl József Esterházy invited German settlers to the region in order to develop its trade and agricultural infrastructure.
Nowadays, the Kuny Domonkos Museum housed in the castle awaits visitors with its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The display showcases the rich history of this colourful region.
