NITRA is one of the oldest cities in Slovakia, situated in western Slovakia at the foot of Zobor Mountain, in the valley of Nitra River. The city has a wealth of historic buildings and natural beauty in its surroundings.The famous castle located in the Old Town, and this is a National Cultural Monument as well.It built int he 11th century on a limestone rock, surrounded by the meanders of the river. The medieval castle is a real landmark. It is composed of four different parts: the cathedral bishop palace, outbuildings and outer walls with one entrance gate. The core of the castle is St. Emmeram’s Cathedral with the Bishop’s residence, with several different parts. The oldest surviving part is the Romanesque church of the St.Emmeram’s Cathedral from the 11th century. The other two parts of the cathedral are the originally Gothic Upper Church from zhe 14th century, and the Lower Church from the 17th century. The originally Gothic Bishop’s Palace got its present Late Baroque appearance in the 18th century. There are also surviving parts of the castle fortifications, the majority of which were created int he 16th and 17th centuries and smaller part from the Middle Ages. The church is currently being remodelled. Nitra is home to several significant museums and galleries, the Museum of the Nitra Region supervises collection objects on several fields /Archaeology, Ethnograpy, Numismatic, Geology and Zoology/.
