ÓNOD

Ónod is a village 22 kilometers away from Miskolc. Its area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, the name Olnod was first mentioned in diplomas in 1296. The castle was built in the 14th century, it was a stone castle. The increasing of the Turkish threat the square-shaped fortress was strengthened in the four corners with Italian bastions. After the castle of Eger had overtaken by the Turks in 1596, Ónod became the most important fortress. The task of the stationed military was to stop the increasing attacks of the Turks. During the Rákóczi independence war, in 1707 they held the Ónod national assembly near the town, where the rebels declared the dethronement of the House of Habsburg. The castle was repeatedly burned and destroyed between the 15th and 18th century. In the second half of the 20th century during the excavation and restoration the towers and wall sections were built back. The former Török Castle can be found in the outskirts of the town. The spectacular, one-story, corner-towered, baroque castle was built by István Török in the early 1800s.
