The city of Pécs, implying a Mediterranean atmosphere, is located in South Hungary. In the 2nd century the area had already been inhabited by the romans, they called it Sophianae. In the 4th century, the settlement became a provincial centre, later it was a significant centre of Christians. In 2000 the early Christian cemetery was listed as UNESCO World Heritage. This compilation of findings in architecture and murals comprehensively vision the northern and westernern provinces early Christian burial architecture and culture.King Saint István the First founded an episcopate in 1009, later King Lajos Nagy the First (1342-1382) founded a university which was the very first in Hungary. Bishop Janus Pannonius raised Pécs to the country’s cultural centre in the medieval Hungary. He was the great poet of Hungarian humanism and the great writer of Latin poets.
Many monuments have remained from the Turkish occupation, e.g. baths, mosques. As a Christian monument the cathedral and the episcopal palace are the centre of religion tourism. Nowadays, museum attracts many visitors such as the Csontváry Museum, the Janus Pannonius Museum, the Zsolnay Museum and the Victor Vasarely Museum.
