SZABADKÍGYÓS

Szabadközség is situated in Békés County, approximately 11 kilometres far from Békéscsaba. Nearby the settlement we can discover the Körös-Maros National Park. Historic sources from the year of 1398 mentions the settlement as Kégyós, however, it had been inhabited since the Hungarian’s arrival to the Carpathian Basin. During the Turkish ages it became deserted and later in the 18th century it was again populated.
At the end of the following century the land changed hands to the Wenckheim family. Earl Frigyes Wenckheim (1842-1912) with his wife Krisztina Wenckheim (1849-1924) began the construction of representative Neo-Renaissance chateau based on the designs of the famous architect Milkós Ybl.The couple lived in Budapest for many years, furthermore, they erected another palace in 1889, which nowadays it houses the Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Library.
The settlement offers many opportunities and programs for cultural tourist and active tourist as that of the hikers and lovers of water sports.
