FÜZÉR

Above the settlement of Füzér we can discover the castle mountain as a part of the Zemplén Nature Reserve, which was titled as Hungary’s nature miracle in 2008. The exact date of the beginning of the castle’s construction fades to oblivion, however, some historical sources from the year of 1264 remained that mention the building. The fortification was possessed for 200 hundred years by the wealthy Perény family who truly improved the building including the construction of rampart, furthermore, a gothic chapel was erected. After the defeat at Mohács (1526) Péter Perényi guarded the national relic, the Saint Crown, unfortunately both of them fell into Ottoman captivity.
The last lord of the castle was Imre Thököly, whose uprising was suppressed, and in 1683 the Austrian troops exploded the castle. Since 1990 the archaeological excavation has been uninterrupted which led to the renovation of the chapel and the partial reconstruction of the residential palace. Within the castle we can enjoy the view of the Hegyköz basin and the mountain range which is perfect for hiking. During the summer spectacular tournaments, archery shows and medieval battle scenes, respectively, recapture the atmosphere of the period of the castle’s intense life.
