SÜMEG
The town of Sümeg is situated to the south-west of Bakony Mountain. King Béla the Fourth urged the construction of fortresses after the Mongol Invasion (1241). In accordance to his decrees the erection of the building began. Later it played an important role as a border fortress against the Ottoman conquerors. In 1656-58, Bishop György Széchenyi fortified the settlement with walls and watchtowers. Soon the fortress developed into a town which was well-known for its pottery and bazaars. Pieces remaining of the 1100 meter long wall still offer a magnificent sight today. The fortress is considered to be one of Hungary’s best-preserved strongholds. Visitors can enjoy a multitude of interesting programs such as historical jousts and medieval weapon shows. Nearby, we can discover the 9.2 hectare arboretum which is a favourite touristic destination. Furthermore, excellent wines can be enjoyed at the Episcopal Palace Wine Cellar.
In the 18th century Sümeg became an episcopal seat.Subsequently, a beautiful church was built at that time. The famous artist, Franz-Anton Maulbertsch created the wall-paintings inside. The franciscan friars have always played a defining role in the town’s life. The monastery welcomes pilgrims at all time. The Pilgrimage Church is one of the Honouring-Mary pilgrimage stations.
