SZÉCSÉNY
The town of Szécsény is situated on the plain next to Ipoly River in Nógrád County. The inner keep was erected by Tamás Szécsényi or his sons from the Kacsics clan in the 14th century. The building was first mentioned in 1456 when it had already been considered as a castle and later was cold as a castle or as a keep. It hosted king Zsigmond, János Hunyadi and king Mátyás (1458-1490), respectively. In spite of the war with the Ottoman Empire caused havoc to the castle earl István Koháry was able to renovate the building in after 1690.
Nowadays the castle functions as a museum and carries the name of the well-known politician who was also an archaeologist and scientist Ferenc Kubinyi, furthermore, it displays comprehensively the historical and archaeological artefacts of Nógrád County.
We can discover a Benedict church which carries gothic marks from the 14th century, is located at the north-western part of the castle district, in addition, it is accompanied nice monastery built between in 1694 and 1734. We can visit the monastery’s room with the gothic vault where Duke Ferenc Rákóczi stayed at. Within the limits of a historical tour we can visit the castle with its garden, the bastions, the church ruins and the church in the historical downtown of Szécsény.
