SZIGLIGET
Situated on the north shore of Balaton, Szigliget is located on unique volcanic hills, on a peninsula between Balaton and Keszthely. The ancient fortress adjacent to the village of Szigliget was built by the Benedictines from Pannonhalma at the beginning of 1260’s. At the time of the Ottoman threat it served as an important border-castle. The spectacular view of the building and the astonishing panorama of Lake Balaton await us from the top of the 239 metres high Várhegy. In the past few years, impressive reconstructions were made. The fortress has become a favourite destination for history enthusiastic tourists. It features commanding walls, towers and portholes. The village of Öregfalu with its bleached small houses, lies in the vicinity of the fortress, making the romantic panorama more attractive for the onlooker.
The church tower of Avas constructed in the 13th century conjures historical times, and brings to life the feeling of the medieval ages. Nowadays, while strolling down the Kamon-kő trail, we can discover the natural treasures of one of the most beautiful settlements on the Balaton shore.
