VAJA

Vaja is located in Nyírség part of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, approximately 20 kilometres far from Vásárosnamény.
Its name’s first trace in history dates back, according to historic sources, to the year of 1272, later in 1312 it was possessed by the Vay family. The castle once was a strong and large fortification, however, only a part of remained. At the beginning of the 18th century this was the scene where the negotiations about the peace after the Rákóczi Independence War took place. The lord of the castle at that time, lord Ádám had to escape and died in Danzing in 1719. Fortunately, the keep was  not demolished by the Hapsburgs, consequently we can enjoy this renaissance building, which houses the Vay Ádám Museum. The museum demonstrates the age of Duke Ferenc Rákóczi through unique exhibitions, in addition, it investigates the memories and evidences of the Independence War on the region of Felső-Tisza. The museum’s garden we can view on the statues of the settlement’s significant historical characters.
In 1906 the reburial of Ferenc Rákóczi and his companions took place here, also the ashes of Ádám Vay were brought back to his homeland and put to rest.
