SÁROSPATAK

Along the river Bodrog lays Sárospatak approximately 70 kilometres far from Miskolc at the foothills of Eperjes-Tokaj Moutain. It was a significant part of a mediaeval trade route heading towards Poland. The settlement’s castle was erected by king András the First (1046-60) where later Saint Elisabeth (1207-1231), daughter of King András the Second was born. King Zsigmond (1387-1437) granted the settlement with city rights, furthermore, the King Mátyás (1458-1490) vested the city with trade fair rights in 1460.
In 1531 the legendary Reformate College which is considered to be one of the most significant educational institutions of Hungary. Its library houses a unique museum that allows the visitor to inspect the past time education. The castle and the town was fortified by Péter Perényi between 1534 and 1542. The five-story high keep, the Vörös tower, connected to the rhomb-shaped castle with Italian bastions was reconstructed in renaissance style in 1540. The most charming room with its intact paintings is the Sub Rosa and also the House Bokályos with its wall tie from Istanbul is really attractive.
